HOW FAR AWAY IS THE HORIZON FOR THE RETURN TO CRUISING?

When will we see cruising return to even a semblance of normal? It’s a baffling question as every week seems to bring hope, but also uncertainty.

Take Costa Cruises which resumed sailing in early September as the first line in the Carnival Corp. family to weigh anchor. Costa Deliziosa is doing a series of seven-day all-Italy cruises, carrying only Italian residents. But at the same time, Costa announced cancellation of planned South America cruises by three of its ships in the 2021 winter season.

While we are seeing a few river ships and some ocean ships starting to resume operations in Europe, they’re reserved for Europeans only. Most major lines that cater to North Americans have cancelled sailings through the end of October. And some are looking much further into the future before attempting a re-start.
